Description of the activity
1. Look up the common ducks in an encyclopaedia and talk about some basic facts.
2. The riverfront or the nearest reservoir is a good place to bird-watch and feed the ducks with dry pastry (always throw it in the water to moisten it).
3. Make a few experiments to demonstrate that water and grime/fat don't mix
Pour some water and kitchen oil in a glass, stir and observe. The oil will separate itself out and form a stain on the water surface.
4. Cut out two small pieces of paper. Coat one of them in oil. Fill a larger container with water. Put both the pieces on the water surface. Observe.
5. Make two small models of a tent out of fabric (tee-pee-shaped for example). Explain the term and the principles of impregnation and try impregnating one of the models. Leave the second without impregnation. Put a piece of cotton-wool inside each model. Then spray the models with water (to simulate rain). Observe. Which piece of wool will stay dry?
